I wrote a long post about how gay marriage isn’t really a wedge issue, but more of a red herring, designed to lure your attention from the record of non-accomplishment that is the Bush Administration.
But then the computer froze, and took my post with it. Such is life.
Look, if you want to talk [...]

A Wedge of this, A Wedge of that…
February 25, 2004Leading By Example
February 21, 2004I was talking with some people last night, while working, and the Bush AWOL story came up. We tossed it about some, and what I ended up realizing is this:
It doesn’t really matter, strictly speaking, whether Bush joined the National Guard, or the Air Force–that is, the quantity of his service.
What matters is the quality [...]
The Tale of the Tape: Bush’s Economic Disaster
February 21, 2004The Tale of the Tape: Bush’s Economic Disaster
3,000,000: The amount of jobs America has lost since Bush took office.
1,000,000: The amount of jobs that have been sent overseas since Bush took office.
50% Higher: How much health care costs have increased since Bush took office.
33% Higher: How much unemployment has increased since Bush took office.

Questions of Service
February 17, 2004I’m not going to comment much on the President’s National Guard service during Vietnam. Others, like Kevin Drum, have done an outsanding job of documenting what’s going on.
There’s two points that I do want to make, though.
First, what’s the President hiding? Maybe there’s nothing in his records. But the longer he takes in keeping [...]
Willfully obnoxious…and some advice
February 16, 2004Apparently the College Republicans are at it again: scoring cheap publicity points by doing something obnoxious.
The CRs at Roger Williams University in Bristol, RI have decided to create a “whites-only” scholarship. According to them, it’s a move to protest affirmative action.
Some of the requirements: an essay on “why you are proud of your white [...]
A Walkabout Outback
February 16, 2004I’ve had the chance this week to really get outside the wire, as we call it here. I had to accompany a convoy of vehicles which were returning to Kuwait in order to get cleaned and loaded on the transports back Stateside.
So, of course, I had the chance to see a good chunk of [...]
Tanning in Kuwait
February 13, 2004Okay, not really. I’m doing some of the work necessary to make my unit’s redeployment to the States easier–washing vehicles, turning in equipment we never used (like our NBC suits), that sort of thing.
I’ll have a longer post once I have time about my travel from the Triangle to Kuwait. For now, sleep awaits.
Absence
February 11, 2004I’ll be taking off for Kuwait tomorrow. That means that while I’m on the road, I’ll be unable to post or check email. But feel free to send me whatever missives you’d like.
See you in a couple of day–I hope!
Wishing won’t make it so
February 11, 2004I read the transcript of the President’s interview with Tim Russert. One thing immediately jumped out at me–and now I know the answer to my previous post’s question.
Speaking about the possibility that Saddam’s despicable regime would be replaced by an even more frightening and dangerous fundamentalist regime, the President dismisses it out of hand.
“They’re [...]
A Myriad of Problems, But Nary a Solution
February 11, 2004Reading Matthew Yglesias, I thought that he stated our problems in Iraq pretty simply. What’s more, he’s right. I don’t know whether the insurgency is composed of only Sunni Arabs, but that’s where they got their start, and I would be surprised if it were otherwise.
The insurgency isn’t our main problem. We are making [...]
