Y’know, I can’t emphasize this enough. But it’s time, and I’m not the only one–Mark Kleiman thinks so, Susan Estrich thinks so, damn near the entire liberal blogosphere thinks so. Heck, even John Kerry thinks so.
Malone : You said you wanted to get Capone. Do you really wanna get him? You see what I’m saying is, what are you prepared to do?
Eliot Ness : Anything and everything in my power.
Malone : And THEN what are you prepared to do? If you open the can on these worms you must be prepared to go all the way because they’re not gonna give up the fight until one of you is dead.
Eliot Ness : How do you do it then?
Malone : You wanna know how you do it? Here’s how, they pull a knife, you pull a gun. He sends one of yours to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue! That’s the Chicago way, and that’s how you get Capone! Now do you want to do that? Are you ready to do that?
Eliot Ness : I have sworn to capture this man with all legal powers at my disposal and I will do so.
Malone : Well the Lord hates a coward. Do you know what a blood oath is Mr. Ness?
Eliot Ness : Yes.
Malone : Good, cause you just took one.
I don’t just want to beat the GOP–I want to end them. I don’t care how many decades it takes–I want to end them.
If you took even a passing glance at their convention this past week, you quickly realized that they will brook no opposition to their policies or their politics. You are either with them, or against America. Our liberal democracy cannot survive without a healthy opposition. Since they will brook no opposition, therefore they stand squarely against our democracy, seeking to twist it into a dark and perverted mockery of all that we hold dear.
America can’t afford the GOP–a party of madmen and zealots, a party of liars and cheats, champion of all that which is divisive and hateful in our hearts. A party that appeals to the darker demons, not the better angels of our nature.
A party whose heroes are Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson, who roundly blamed us for inflicting 9/11 upon ourselves, time and again. A party whose heroes include Rick Santorum, who seeks to reduce the magic of human love to a pedestrian physical union between man & woman, and Tom Delay, who would seek to limn his pockets even in a time of supposed national sacrifice. A party whose statement of philosophy was snarled by Zell Miller, the political heir of George Wallace, Lester Maddox and Strom Thurmond.
So let me say this: you’re either with the GOP or against America. If what I said above reflects what you believe–if you’d rather be a patriot for a party, rather than a country–then we must stand against each other. We can’t afford your lust for power and glory, a lust that is slowly strangling our children’s dream of a better America.
If you vote Republican–if you support Republicans–then you’re supporting that which I wrote above. There is no gray there. You’re either with us or against us. There are no responsible Republicans–each is the enemy of America, and each must either pick America or Republicanism. There are no poor, misguided fools here–they know what Republicanism stands for now, and it is a sad, petty shadow of all that is beautiful about this country.
And once the battle is done–once the war is done–out of the ashes of this perverted party, a responsible party will again rise, willing to brook the back and forth of a vibrant, free society.
But the GOP is not that party. They’ve made that abundantly clear.
