The Chicago Way

Y’know, I can’t emphasize this enough. But it’s time, and I’m not the only one–Mark Kleiman thinks so, Susan Estrich thinks so, damn near the entire liberal blogosphere thinks so. Heck, even John Kerry thinks so.

Malone : You said you wanted to get Capone. Do you really wanna get him? You see what I’m saying is, what are you prepared to do?

Eliot Ness : Anything and everything in my power.

Malone : And THEN what are you prepared to do? If you open the can on these worms you must be prepared to go all the way because they’re not gonna give up the fight until one of you is dead.

Eliot Ness : How do you do it then?

Malone : You wanna know how you do it? Here’s how, they pull a knife, you pull a gun. He sends one of yours to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue! That’s the Chicago way, and that’s how you get Capone! Now do you want to do that? Are you ready to do that?

Eliot Ness : I have sworn to capture this man with all legal powers at my disposal and I will do so.

Malone : Well the Lord hates a coward. Do you know what a blood oath is Mr. Ness?

Eliot Ness : Yes.

Malone : Good, cause you just took one.

I don’t just want to beat the GOP–I want to end them. I don’t care how many decades it takes–I want to end them.

If you took even a passing glance at their convention this past week, you quickly realized that they will brook no opposition to their policies or their politics. You are either with them, or against America. Our liberal democracy cannot survive without a healthy opposition. Since they will brook no opposition, therefore they stand squarely against our democracy, seeking to twist it into a dark and perverted mockery of all that we hold dear.

America can’t afford the GOP–a party of madmen and zealots, a party of liars and cheats, champion of all that which is divisive and hateful in our hearts. A party that appeals to the darker demons, not the better angels of our nature.

A party whose heroes are Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson, who roundly blamed us for inflicting 9/11 upon ourselves, time and again. A party whose heroes include Rick Santorum, who seeks to reduce the magic of human love to a pedestrian physical union between man & woman, and Tom Delay, who would seek to limn his pockets even in a time of supposed national sacrifice. A party whose statement of philosophy was snarled by Zell Miller, the political heir of George Wallace, Lester Maddox and Strom Thurmond.

So let me say this: you’re either with the GOP or against America. If what I said above reflects what you believe–if you’d rather be a patriot for a party, rather than a country–then we must stand against each other. We can’t afford your lust for power and glory, a lust that is slowly strangling our children’s dream of a better America.

If you vote Republican–if you support Republicans–then you’re supporting that which I wrote above. There is no gray there. You’re either with us or against us. There are no responsible Republicans–each is the enemy of America, and each must either pick America or Republicanism. There are no poor, misguided fools here–they know what Republicanism stands for now, and it is a sad, petty shadow of all that is beautiful about this country.

And once the battle is done–once the war is done–out of the ashes of this perverted party, a responsible party will again rise, willing to brook the back and forth of a vibrant, free society.

But the GOP is not that party. They’ve made that abundantly clear.

  1. I totally agree with your sentiment 10,000 percent! However, you need to edit to clear up a phrase or two and check for spelling.

  2. Consider the possibility that there might be responsible republicans who feel utterly lost just now.

They can’t go along with what the democrats are saying, and they can’t go along with what their own party is saying.

I’ve seen the claim that the current republican party is dominated by “Dixiecrats” who found they could take over the republicans when they couldn’t take over the democrats. What can be done with such people? Can they be persuaded to live differently? Unless they’re persuaded otherwise or killed, they’ll be trying to take over one of the top two parties.

Democracy requires a lot of people who’re willing to work toward democracy. If we don’t have them, we’ll have to accept whatever we get instead.

    I’m not sure who said it (I think I might have found it on the Daily Kos);

“When Fascists come to America, they won’t be wearing brown shirts, they’ll be wearing Brooks Brothers suits.”

  4. I agree with much of this, the fight must be entered to win at all costs…. but why must we use Hollywood script writers?

  5. Interesting reading. Given that there are people on the right who have decided that a Democratic party which sides with and roots for TERROROSTS must go. we are interesting times: the right has more guns, the left is more used to using WMDs to get their way…..

  6. “Our liberal democracy cannot survive without a healthy opposition.” – Arkhangel

When you guys manage to become a healthy opposition, or even a credible one, do let everyone know, please.

  7. Sounds like you are ready to go all the way to the Cambodian solution.

Ask yourself why the number of registered Democrats has been slowly falling behind that of Republicans. Ask why Republicans are supported by millions of donations by common people but Democrats are supported by the likes of billionaires Soros and Gates, Buffet and Jobs.

You are losing in the marketplace of ideas, so now you are ready to turn to the gun? Who is the fascist here?

  8. Democrats will win because even death won’t stop us from voting.

That is Rove’s creed to his followers.

When many of you defend Kerry from the obviously trumped up charges from these right-wing nihilist you cannot remind them of Bush’s failure to defend America.

Bush hid in a class of children because he is impotent when he is under attack.

    He cannot deal with confrontation.

He ignored the intelligence that warned of this attack and then blamed everyone else for his being asleep at the wheel.

He went AWOL on 9-11 like he has through out his life!!!!

He was a coward in 1968 and on 9-11, cowards should not be President…If you loved your nation, you would realize this. You should respect your nation more than your party and stop defending a coward.

Bush is a failure as a cheerleader, a soldier and a President!!!

Oh and another thing if Bush is BiSexual, would that make him a flip-flopper?

  10. In his speech to the firefighters, Kerry explained the new strategy by recounting a war story, of beaching his boat to confront the enemy. “More than 30 years ago, I learned an important lesson — when you’re under attack, the best thing to do is turn your boat into the attacker, and that’s what I intend to do today,” he said, noting that he still carries shrapnel in his leg from the wounds that led to one of the Purple Hearts. “I’m not going to let anyone question my commitment to defending America — then, now, or ever.”

  11. If what I’m picking up from my GOP acquaintances is any indicator, the story of this election will be the number of decent, moderate Republicans who stay home come Nov. 2.

  13. Its amazing how how people such as Arkhangel can allow their Hatred to shield them from the obvious truth. I know several people just like you who are so comitted to the defeat of George W. Bush that you will do anything to vote him out of office…INCLUDING voting for KErry. GWB has liberated 2 countries, crushed the taliban and Al Qaida, and put nuclear inspectors in Lybia, Iran, and N Korea with fewer than 1100 casualties. GWB is responsible for putting Hussein to trial–a man who murdered 300,000 of his own people. The USA is fundamentally a safer place with GWB in the white house. What has Kerry Done?? what are his views on domestic issues?? all i can gather from his campaign speeches are the same phrases over and over-“I fought in Vietnam” and “I am not George Bush” well my friends, sooner or later Kerry will have to make a decision, and it would be nice to know which way he’s gonna go, cuz right now i am very confused, and if you will see thru your hatred, you will see the truth. People like you make me vomit. you rant and rave and protest like wild animals all in the name of Democracy!?!? how about comming together to build a better unifyied nation?? how about supporting our commander-in-chief?? people like you only add to Michael Moore’s Anti-American propaganda, people like you only show the Terrorists that we have weaknesses. people like you destroy our nation, and threaten our homeland security. then you have the Audasity to call me “the enemy of the nation”. sooner or later, you’ll see the truth.
