The tragic story of Joe Gaetjens

(courtesy ESPN Outside the Lines)

Earlier today, the U.S. played England in the World Cup for the first time in six decades. Much was made of England wanting to avenge their 60-year-old loss. Gaetjens, a Haitian immigrant, was the man responsible for what might be the greatest upset in World Cup history – his goal gave the Americans a 1-0 victory.

All along, I’d assumed that Gaetjens had slipped into obscurity, as had much of the team that played that game in Brazil.

The truth, as you’ll see above, was ineffably much more tragic. I actually teared up and choked up when I watched the story last night.
